Packaged or customised software?

When you need software for your business, should you buy off-the-shelf software or should you commission a customised system?

There's no answer that's right for every business and every application, but there are some points which you should consider.

  • If you are looking for a standard application such as accounting software, you will find a wide range of off-the-shelf packages to choose from. If you have fairly standard needs you will find an off-the-shelf solution to be economical and convenient.
  • If your business has unique needs that go beyond the facilities provided by a packaged solution you could consider customised software.
  • Often a standard package will provide most of what is required but will miss out support for a vital part of the business - perhaps something that it does differently which sets it apart from its competitors.
  • Whilst missing out a vital feature, packaged software may also provide many features that are not needed. Whilst this looks as if it may not be a problem it can make the system difficult to use and waste staff time.

Finally a packaged solution may require a considerable amount of configuration. In the case of some standard CRM and ERP systems a small or medium sized business may find it is spending more on configuring a packaged product that it would have cost to build a customised system.
